About this process

How would you like to live in old age?

Single/couple apartment, shared apartment, cluster or large household? Retirement settlement or multi-generational house?

In the Retirement Strategy of the City of Zurich 2035, the to test new forms of communal housing in existing housing estates or as part of new construction projects and renovations and to expand its housing offer. At the same time, the SAW is required to increase its housing stock from around 2000 apartments (2022) to 3000 or more.

To gain planning security, the SAW launched a survey on this platform among Zurich residents over 55 on the demand for communal housing types and made it possible to participate in the development of new communal forms of housing for the elderly in four workshops. People met here who are interested in new forms of communal living and/or are looking for like-minded people for a possible later life together.

The aim of the participation was to develop feasible and operable communal housing typologies for the elderly by spring 2023. The survey examined what kind of communal forms of housing are in demand and how this can be translated into housing projects in terms of space and business.

The subsequent workshops served to deepen the findings and enabled interested parties to jointly review and consolidate their own wishes and goals with regard to a possible application for already planned cluster apartments and intergenerational housing projects.
