Developing the Schlachthof site in dialogue
Participation in test and master planning
About this process
What is important to you for the future of the Schlachthof site?
What is it about?
The slaughterhouse site is continuing to develop: In the long term, the area is to become an urban workplace area for local food production and processing and offer space for public green and open spaces as well as a primary school and, if necessary, apartments. At the same time, a meeting place for the neighbourhood is to be created that connects the neighbouring districts with each other. The city council has therefore decided not to extend the leases with the three current main users, which expire in 2029, and to discontinue slaughtering operations on the site in order to enable the development of the area.
Test planning is currently being carried out, which shows the possible development of the area with the specified main uses. A large part of the existing buildings are listed buildings. Consequently, with the further development of the area, the historic brick buildings will be preserved and supplemented with new buildings.
Online participation is complete!
At the first dialogue event in December 2024, concerns for the development of the slaughterhouse site were already submitted by the population and other stakeholders. On the basis of these concerns, the online participation took place from 7 to 28 May 2025, in which further concerns and ideas on uses and offers for the neighbourhood could be brought in and discussed. The specified main uses (commercial, park, primary school and possibly apartments) were not the subject of online participation and could not be questioned. The population had the opportunity to participate in the three prepared theme rooms, where the concerns raised can now be viewed.
In order for the participants of the online participation to be able to refer to a specific sub-area if necessary, the following subdivision of the area was made:
Sub-area A: Herdernstrasse
area Sub-area B: Historic slaughterhouse with central hall
Sub-area C: Hardgutstrasse
area Sub-area D: Today's area of the slaughterhouse (SBZ)
Note: The Centravo site (sub-area E) at the corner of Hardgutstrasse/Hohlstrasse (current interim uses, e.g. Hardgutbrache) is not part of the ongoing development planning. For this area, there is already a project for the Neue Wache-West in combination with the new city archive. More information: Competition Guard West and City Archive | City of Zurich
