The platform "Participation in Zurich's future" is the participation portal of the city of Zurich.

Process phases

With the referendum of 28 November 2021, the municipal structure plans were adopted. It calls for the city quarters to be divided into smaller neighbourhood blocks and for through traffic within the neighbourhood blocks to be kept away. 

With the postulate GR No. 2022/24 of 19 January 2022, the municipal council calls on the city to examine areas for the realisation of neighbourhood blocks as pilot projects.

Objectives, criteria and framework conditions for pilot areas were discussed with the echo group and a proposal for pilot areas was mirrored. With the referendum on 22 September 2024, the counter-proposals of the two urban climate initiatives were adopted. They demand that road areas be redistributed in favor of walking, cycling and public transport as well as for greening.  

On 16 November 2024, the first of three forum events took place in the Aussersihl pilot area. Needs assessment, clarification and concretization of locally specific goals and needs.

The second forum event took place in Aussersihl on 18 January 2025. Discussion of variants and scenarios with residents and businesses.

The third forum event took place in Aussersihl on 29 March 2025. Presentation of the implementation concept. Collection and clarification of final feedback and questions.

In September, the actual surveys for monitoring in the pilot areas of Aussersihl and Unterstrass will start, as well as street meetings on site with the registered interested persons. 

The traffic changes and plans in accordance with §16 of the Roads Act for the measures in the pilot areas of Aussersihl and Unterstrass will be published in the municipal official gazetteofficial gazette. 

Implementation will start in Aussersihl and Unterstrass from spring 2026, if no objections are received.

About this process

Come in: More space for neighbourhood life is being created here

The area in Aussersihl is characterised by small cafés and bars, various culinary offerings, vibrant life and different residents and families. We appreciate the Aussersihl area for very different things. To ensure that we can continue to use these places in a variety of ways in the future, we are starting this area as a pilot project for "neighbourhood blocks". The aim of these is to create more space for neighbourhood life, to prevent creeping traffic, to promote pedestrian and bicycle traffic and to increase road safety, especially on the way to school.

What is a "neighbourhood block"?

"Neighbourhood blocks" comprise several neighbourhood streets and rows of houses. Suitable traffic measures, such as one-way streets or dead ends, will prevent through traffic. The access and departure of residents, employees, delivery traffic, emergency services as well as supply and disposal are guaranteed at all times. In order to upgrade the road space in a relatively short time, flexible elements such as benches, plant troughs and bicycle parking bars are available for the pilot phase.
