What should be created?
An open community group brings together people of all ages who want to take action for their local ecosystems while learning directly from nature in their immediate environment. With moderation and professional ecological support, the participants work together on small biodiversity projects in the district. Through practical experience and joint learning, a sustainable understanding of local ecosystems and wildlife is created – knowledge that grows over time and naturally contributes to more climate-friendly, net-zero-oriented decisions in everyday life. The activities are tied to specific locations in the neighbourhood and transform little-used or maintenance-intensive areas into lively places of learning. For example, neglected green strips can be transformed into species-rich habitats. At Binz station, a Miyawaki mini-forest could create shade and habitat, while along Binzstrasse and Binzallee, mobile planters and green tree slices offer native wildflowers for pollinators – without affecting the infrastructure. The Kohlerwiese can develop into a wildflower meadow, and adjacent forest areas are upgraded by new habitats for endangered species. Families can get creatively involved, for example by building deadwood structures, cairns or hedges for birds, while the pond on Borrweg serves as a lively place for playful learning. In addition, the participants meet for workshops such as upcycling, permaculture or rainwater harvesting. The opportunities are based on the interests and capacities of the community and are prioritized together. In addition, the community invites neighbors to participate in joint activities such as the observation and documentation of animal species and seasonal changes in Binz and Alt-Wiedikon, supported by citizen science tools. At the same time, it creates a space for curiosity and discovery – and perhaps also an impulse for people of all ages, who see it as a fulfilling career prospect in the long term. Over time, these shared experiences foster a strong sense of connectedness, responsibility, and community action, while visibly improving biodiversity, cooling the microclimate, and strengthening social cohesion in the neighborhood. Even though it is only a small beginning, this pilot project can prove the profound impact it will have on the whole of Zurich.
