Multifunctional verges: Redesign of Bertastrasse

What should be created?
« In view of this focus on the square, we must not forget that urban life takes place largely on the streets. » This statement is a reminder that the street represents the finest scale level of the quarter and forms the central basis of everyday experience. Far from being mere traffic areas, streets are living spaces. In Zurich today, these spaces face several major challenges. The lack of green spaces combined with the effects of climate change is exacerbating the phenomenon of urban heat islands. These effects are further exacerbated by the current design of public spaces: strong soil sealing that restricts the infiltration of rainwater, low storage capacity, a lack of shade due to insufficient vegetation and standardisation of urban equipment. The selected road section is located on Bertastrasse, between Birmensdorferstrasse and Rotachstrasse, in the Alt-Wiedikon district. Over a length of 95 metres, it includes 12 parking spaces, 10 traffic signs, 8 bicycle racks and 2 parking meters. The project proposes to convert the parking spaces into "multi-purpose strips". This concept aims to bring functional diversity back into the street space while maintaining a certain flexibility. Parking will not be abolished, but will be temporary and adaptable. The strips can accommodate different uses as required and thus promote a dynamic appropriation of public space – for example, for lingering, expanding, parking, planting, playing or protecting. The intersections will be designed as entrance areas, which will be marked by a change of surface and a speed limit of 20 km/h. Traffic will remain unchanged, ensuring the accessibility of the site. The project integrates the principles of the "sponge city" by promoting the infiltration of rainwater. Roof wastewater is directed to these permeable areas, while reverse slopes prevent potentially polluted street water from getting there. The elimination of the differences in level between the pavement and the roadway, combined with clayey materials, allows for an inclusive use of space for everyone, especially for people with reduced mobility. This section of road is taking advantage of a concrete opportunity: the condition of the existing surface indicates that it will be renewed soon. This would allow the proposed measures to be implemented as part of a cost-effective redesign project. In the long term, this model could also be transferred to other districts, especially in areas affected by the expansion of district heating networks, as interventions in the road infrastructure are taking place there anyway (Tiefenbrunnen, Alstetten-Nord, Alstetten-Ost, Gewerbeschule, Langstrasse). Originally developed as part of a master's thesis at the ZHAW, this project has been further adapted for professional application. However, implementation would require additional studies, in particular on underground infrastructures, the distribution of public and private parking space, and the specific characteristics of the urban fabric at the chosen location.
