Fermentation connects Wiedikon

In Alt-Wiedikon/Binz, an open fermentation community is to be created that connects people in the neighbourhood through sustainable nutrition, preservation and mutual exchange of knowledge. The goal is not just a single workshop, but to build a vibrant, hyperlocal community in which fermentation as an everyday practice is tried out, developed and shared together. Entry will take place via a kick-off event with professional input and a practical workshop. Together, the participants produce their first fermented products, for example kefir, kombucha, yoghurt or other simple applications for everyday life. The kick-off serves not only to impart knowledge, but above all to bring people together in the neighbourhood, to break down inhibitions and to create a common starting point for the community. Subsequently, the community will be further developed and accompanied in a targeted manner. Via a low-threshold digital channel, for example via WhatsApp, Signal or Telegram, participants stay in touch, share experiences, recipes, questions and inspirations and can also pass on fermentation cultures if necessary. This creates a local exchange structure that has an effect beyond the first event and can involve new people on an ongoing basis. The plan is to start small and let the community grow gradually. Additional meetings, informal exchange rounds or small follow-up formats in the neighbourhood are conceivable in the further course. This creates an open community project that makes sustainable nutrition tangible, imparts practical skills and connects people in the neighbourhood around a common theme. The idea combines tradition and innovation: Fermentation is an old preservation technique that is gaining in importance again today because it promotes a more conscious approach to food, facilitates access to plant-based and homemade nutrition and enables community learning. In the pilot district, this is to create a social format that strengthens exchange, self-efficacy and resource-saving everyday practices in the neighbourhood

We are inspired by the Fermentista Festival in Zurich and by public workshop formats such as "Wild Fermentation" by Grün Stadt Zürich. These examples show how fermentation can function as a collaborative learning and exchange format. Our idea transfers this approach into a local, long-term community for Alt-Wiedikon.

Inside the pilot quarter. For the kick-off, we are looking for an easily accessible common room with space for about 20 people. Afterwards, the community will be continued via a digital communication channel in order to build longer-term exchange structures. *The attached image is AI-generated with Gemini.
