Short summary

What should be created?
Outside of the private space of one's home, youth lack spaces that they can call their own. In the context of a city, one of the most precious resources is space. The project's goal is to empower and engage young people to value and care for their resources. To provide them with a safe space where they can co-create to suit their interests. By building a space together, we invite teens to learn new skills about circular and bio-based building materials, to imagine possibilities when time and energy is dedicated to building something together, and to provide an alternative space that is independent from school or home. Whether it is a space for making art or music, starting film or book clubs or hosting workshops to learn new skills, depending on the desires of the local community and teens who participate, the space has the capacity to be defined by the user. As a first step, the project proposes activating an existing vacant ground-floor space within the neighborhood as a pilot “Circular Youth Hub”. This space would be temporarily equipped using reclaimed and bio-based materials sourced locally, demonstrating circular construction in practice. It combines a curated second-hand exchange area for clothing and small furniture (similar to a “Brocki”), a small-scale material depot inspired by a Bauteilbörse, and an open workshop space where teenagers can upcycle, repair, and customize items. Rather than functioning as a traditional youth center, the space is conceived as an open, self-directed and culturally relevant environment — more comparable to a creative studio or shared workspace — where users actively shape both the space and its activities. Regular workshops introduce basic knowledge about materials, reuse, and construction, while allowing participants to transform and redefine the space over time. To support local material flows, the hub could be connected to a simple logistics system, such as a shared van, which collects and redistributes items within the neighborhood. In this way, the project creates a visible, attractive, and hands-on environment where circular practices are not only taught but directly experienced.
