What should be created?
We from the non-profit association revamp-it propose to offer a workshop at least once a month in the pilot district on the installation of a Linux operating system on one's own laptop or computer and for support in the daily work with Linux for all residents and small businesses of the pilot district. Background: The vast majority of computers and laptops are disposed of today, although they still work perfectly in terms of hardware and can still be worked with quickly and well. The most common reason for buying a new laptop is that Microsoft no longer offers security updates for the installed version of Windows and an upgrade to a new version of Windows (currently from Windows 10 to 11) is no longer supported by Microsoft on the previous device. The same goes for Apple in terms of Mac laptops and computers. With the installation of Linux as the operating system, these devices can be used for at least another 5 to 10 years with the current versions of all programs, including all security updates. Linux is constantly being developed as free software by thousands of dedicated people around the world, it can be used without license costs for everyone and today is on a par with Windows and Mac in terms of user-friendliness. Due to the significantly longer use of the computers, fewer new devices have to be produced, which means large savings in energy, water, greenhouse gases and precious raw materials, while at the same time reducing electronic waste. Another advantage of using Linux is that we free ourselves from the dependence of the two big tech companies from the USA and gain more digital sovereignty. This is also one reason why more and more public institutions in Europe are switching to Linux as an operating system, such as the country of Denmark and the cities of Copenhagen and Aarhus, the German state of Schleswig-Holstein or the city of Lyon in France. The IT organization of the city of Zurich is also planning a pilot project with Linux as the operating system. So it makes sense to offer the residents and small businesses of the pilot district NettoNull the opportunity to switch to Linux and gain initial experience with it.

We at the revamp-it association have been conducting Linux workshops regularly for many years and have gained a lot of experience with them, e.g. as part of the biannual international Linux Presentation Day, at the Computer Science Days in Zurich, as part of 'Zürich lernt' etc.
