KLIMA GRAND HOTEL - Holidays net zero for residents of Binz and Alt-Wiedikon

Project idea We are launching the first Klima Grand Hotel for all interested people in the net-zero district. Reverse logic: This project does not take place in the neighborhood, but for the neighborhood, as a place of time-out, for the community and as a learning field for people in Binz and Alt-Wiedikon. In this commons holiday resort, net zero is lived consistently but enjoyably and it enables guests to have experiences that can change their everyday lives back home in the long term. At the same time, it offers many residents of the neighbourhood an attractive alternative to a holiday flight. The Klima Grand Hotel is a gateway drug for a larger field of learning: The IG Climate Cooperative wants to build a real climate cooperative for coexistence in the city of Zurich in the long term. Such a municipal climate cooperative has a common holiday resort for the cooperative members, which is easily accessible and offers an alternative to the many isolated private holiday homes. For the implementation of a climate cooperative in Binz Alt Wiedikon, there is currently a lack of a construction site as well as the political will - but we have to start somewhere, and why not with a jointly supported net zero holiday resort? The associated housing estate in the neighbourhood will then automatically follow. Core elements We know that air travel accounts for a massive share of emissions. Terran – i.e. the conscious renunciation of flying – is in this sense the new vegan: a social trend that now needs maximum support, especially in a wealthy society that can afford climate-friendly lifestyles. At its core, it is about negotiating resources within the boundaries of a 1-planet lifestyle – and about the question of how we can find fair, effective solutions in the area of tension between commitment and transparency. Either a vacant hotel is used and is available to residents as a holiday destination for a year at a very reasonable price, or there are enough cooperative members and financial supporters to buy an empty hotel and renovate and expand it according to the requirements. The subsidy from Netto Null Quartier allows the establishment of an office. Cooperative share certificates allow rent/purchase, conversion and operation. Further subsidies are obtained, especially for specific topics/areas. Basic idea A cheap and pleasurable holiday resort where we can have a say, build and negotiate! But it is subject to a statute: Here, people live with resources according to a planet. Exactly: not only accustomed, but lived. With everything that goes with it. Hotel visitors attend meetings and work part-time. This is part of the recovery, because it corresponds to the long-awaited good feeling of finally being able to do something about climate justice: Give us a break! The hotel business is organised as a cooperative, because this means that there is more commitment, more co-responsibility, co-determination and participation. Climate cooperative members receive a special rate for their stay and priority in booking. In addition, the hotel is also open to non-cooperative members, but in the market-oriented price segment. Optionally, the hotel's reception can find a place in the Netto Null Quartier to whet the appetite for the distant holiday resort like a travel agency and to give the keys and the good feeling from Zurich. Effect & Transferability The effect is fourfold: 1) People fly less and spend their holidays in a nearby place in which they themselves are involved, ergo: emissions in the neighbourhood fall 2) These cooperative members do not need their own, often vacant holiday home - a considerable material and energy footprint is eliminated. 3) We learn how net zero life can be beautiful, 4) We generate data and insights that prepare the construction of a climate cooperative settlement in a well-founded way. The long-term goal remains the implementation of a climate cooperative, as also required by the political motion of the City of Zurich. The Commons holiday resort element is a learning field, but also a catalyst for the development of a climate cooperative settlement in the Binz Alt-Wiedikon district.

Currently, a motion for the implementation of a climate-friendly settlement is pending in urban policy. For the project on Thurgauerstrasse of the housing cooperative mehr als wohnen, a package of measures was developed in a working group, in which, among other things, a common holiday destination is established. As a comparison: In the common cooperatives (e.g. Kalkbreite Genossenschaft or Kraftwerk), residents have a more limited private living space, but there are many opportunities to also own a second home or holiday apartment that is not shared with other cooperative members. Of course, there are many sustainable hotels or hotels that follow or are already implementing the "net zero" principle. While many hotels are "carbon neutral" through offsetting (certificate purchase), other net-zero operations are striving to minimize their emissions from construction to operation to disposal. There is currently no concrete example of the additional components a) cooperative co-creation, b) local cooperation and c) learning opportunities in climate justice.
