What should be created?
Climate change is a symptom of a more fundamental economic and social crisis. Awareness of this is important so that helpful initiatives such as a pilot district do not lead to a polarising discussion about superficial linear measures. In order to achieve the desired change (net zero), it is essential to address the root problems in our socio-economic system. Our dominant economic system causes pressures that lead to negative externalities such as greenhouse gas emissions. Their effective pricing as a solution only works in theory and international agreements fall apart due to geopolitics. Since the institutionalization of the modern (central) banking system a good 100 years ago, its lack of diversity has been criticized from a wide variety of sides. The broad advantages of local currencies have been researched, recognized and proven with historical examples (e.g. The Miracle of Wörgl). Technological development and the lessons learned from failed attempts (e.g. www.leu.zurich) today offer promising opportunities to tackle climate change at its root and break through polarized fronts. The pilot quarter is a unique opportunity to launch a local currency due to its activation and networking of local actors. Through scientific support that has already been promised (esp. University of Zurich Finance Professor Thorsten Hens) and close connections with leading international players in the field (e.g. https://edin-rose.com), the necessary expertise and energy exists. A possible cooperation with the city (administration) could further increase the chances of success. In a first phase, implementation options will be developed on a scientifically sound basis (cost estimate of CHF 50,000-100,000). This includes the identification of design and implementation errors from past attempts at local currencies in cooperation with finance professor Thorsten Hens, strengthening relationships in the neighbourhood as well as urban and international collaborations based on already existing networks (e.g. www.stadtkloster.ch), determining potential and needs with the neighbourhood population and other projects of the pilot district, finally including the presentation of various implementation options Prerequisites for success. In a second optional phase, the implementation would be accompanied in cooperation with the pilot district (cost estimate of CHF 100,000 to 150,000). This includes: Technical offers (e.g. currency issuance and trading), tangible prototypes (e.g. at the neighbourhood festival), close and targeted networking in the neighbourhood (especially with pilot neighbourhood project team), regular reporting including suggestions for accompanying measures, adjustments based on findings from international networks and science, handling of locally arising needs and challenges
