What should be created?
In the Binz pilot district, we want to try out how our everyday lives change when advertising spaces no longer encourage increased consumption, but benefit the neighbourhood community itself. Today, large-scale billboard advertising has the purpose of boosting our consumption. However, more consumption means more CO₂ emissions. Advertising regulations are therefore considered an effective instrument for reducing climate-damaging consumption incentives and supporting the path towards net zero. How the city of Zurich should deal with advertising in public spaces in the future is still open. This is where the Binz-Quartier comes into play – as a place where we test together how alternative advertising spaces affect the climate, everyday life and quality of life. For a limited time, we want to try out various ideas on selected advertising spaces in the neighbourhood on how advertising spaces can be used differently: from the visual "dissolution" of the advertising spaces to cooperations with artists from the neighbourhood or the SKDZ, the promotion of sustainable local alternatives or cultural offerings, or the use of advertising spaces by the neighbourhood residents themselves. The quarter thus becomes a lively place where we experience together what public space feels like without consumer pressure. As a research group that is anchored in the neighborhood, we are implementing the project together with the population and local institutions and want to find out how public spaces are perceived in the context of advertising.
