Short summary

What should be created?
Based on the legendary exhibition "Signs of Life: Symbols in the American City" by Venturi, Rauch and Scott Brown from 1976, we transfer the method of sign reading to the most pressing invisible reality of our time and transform the pilot quarter into a walk-in infographic under the title "Signs of Life: CO2 in the Pilot Quarter". While the originators of postmodernism deciphered the decorative elements of suburban houses as symbols of social identity and dreams, we use this visual vocabulary of iconic speech bubbles to translate the abstract burden of the greenhouse gas into the tangible language of everyday life. Since the psychological barrier to climate protection often lies in the unimaginability of masses such as a ton of CO2, we make the neighborhood readable through consistent real-time visualization and contextual labeling. Wherever energy is consumed or emissions are caused, the distinctive labels appear in public spaces and mark parking lots, heating shafts or consumer goods with their exact ecological values. This direct confrontation in the familiar environment uses the realization that sensitization works primarily through direct feedback, by physically anchoring the invisible in space and enabling the inhabitants to understand their living space no longer just as a backdrop, but as a dynamic system of cause and effect. The project dispenses with the moral index finger and instead relies on the analytical power of Pop Art aesthetics to promote a new form of CO2 literacy and to make the pilot district a pioneer of urban development that anchors ecological responsibility in people's everyday lives through radical transparency and visual evidence.
