Short summary

What should be created?
There are queues in front of the Josy – everything but new – because the concept of the city of Zurich works: bring and pick up things in good condition, all free of charge. Use things longer instead of throwing them away. SHIRCLE depot wants to bring exactly this to the pilot district: a place where things live on, neighbors meet and even broken treasures are welcome. // A low-threshold, circular offer that systematically saves things from waste is valuable. But expensive. The Josy costs CHF 5.4 million over three years, CHF 1.8 million per year. For many neighborhoods, such a solution remains out of reach. We believe that a scalable 'lighter and brighter' version is possible for the net-zero pilot quarter in Zurich, using an existing circular sharing infrastructure. // SHIRCLE depot would house three areas under one roof, as easy as SWAP · RESCUE · SHAPE: SWAP (Area 1, open to all): Just like with Josy. Well-preserved things that are no longer needed are given away free of charge. Things you need can be taken with you. Marie Kondo clearing out planned? Bring your things over. Someone else enjoys it. Open to all, without membership and supervised. RETTEN (Area 2, from Basic Member): With self-check-in, broken everyday objects (which you can carry alone) can be handed in for further processing in Area 3. Cracked pillow? Unknown parts of something? They are welcome here. A place where broken treasures do not mean the end, but the beginning of something new.

GESTALTEN (Area 3, Standard Member): The Hobby Room of the Quarter, a community workshop for repair, upcycling and creativity. What creativity needs is not talent, but material, tools, space and the permission to just get started. Broken things are the perfect raw material: they are already broken. No pressure. No verdict. Only the question: What could that be? Creativity is a skill you practice: with coffee and a community that isn't afraid to just try it. Weekly peer-to-peer skill sharing, upcycling challenges and regular workshops. For more complex repairs, we refer to our network of professionals. Monthly community events bring the neighbourhood together around creativity and the circular economy. Broken Rosenthal vase? Try the Japanese way to repair: Kintsugi! Our mission: to keep things in circulation longer, not only in good condition, but also broken. Every thing exchanged saves CO₂, and every thing repaired or upcycled multiplies this saving. // Differences to the Josy: As with the Josy, the exchange area is supervised, with the difference that self-check-in/checkout simplifies the collection of statistics. This leaves more time for the essentials: people, things and encounters. Unlike Josy, SHIRCLE depot also saves broken things from being thrown away. Somewhere in your home it is: the favorite cup with the crack, grandma's worn blanket that no one uses anymore (but no one can throw away either) or simply the broken chair that is too well made to end up in the trash. Things that deserve more than a garbage bag, but what? SHIRCLE depot is the place that understands this. Bring the broken treasure. Find out what can become of it. The workshop as the quarter's hobby room: tools and work space are ready, and broken things are the perfect material to try out without fear of ruining anything. The technical infrastructure (self-check-in, self-checkout) is already in use: SHIRCLE@Josy has been serving as a valuable learning space in partnership with the City of Zurich since the end of 2025. SHIRCLE depot builds directly on the SHIRCLE platform and implements what has been learned from Josy in a smaller form, at lower costs, and also saves broken things from being wasted. A SHIRCLE depot in the net-zero pilot district would be more than a place of exchange: it would realize creative circular economy as the new normal. Josy light. And more. ___________________________________________ The lines outside Josy –everything but new– prove that the City of Zurich's model works: drop off things in good condition, take what you need, everything free. SHIRCLE depot wants to bring exactly that to the Pilotquartier: a place where things live on, neighbours meet, and even broken treasures are welcome. // Keeping things out of the trash is hard to do at scale. And expensive. Josy costs CHF 5.4m over three years, or CHF 1.8m a year. For most neighbourhoods, that expense is simply not an option. We believe a scalable 'lighter and brighter' version is possible for the Netto-Null Pilotquartier, built on existing circular sharing infrastructure. // SHIRCLE depot would combine three zones under one roof, as simple as SWAP · RESCUE · CREATE: SWAP (Zone 1, open to all): Just like Josy. Drop off things you no longer need, take what you can use, all free. Doing a Marie-Kondo clear-out? Bring things for someone else to love. Open to all, no membership required, and staffed. RESCUE (Zone 2, Basic Member and above): Members can drop off broken items (anything they can carry on their own) via self-check-in, to be repaired or reimagined in Zone 3. Torn pillow? Mystery parts from who-knows-what? They're all welcome here. A place where broken treasures don't meet their end; they find a new beginning. CREATE (Zone 3, Standard Member): The neighbourhood's hobby room. A community workshop for repair, upcycling and making. What creativity needs isn't talent; it needs material, tools, space, and permission to just have a go. Broken things are the perfect raw material: They're already broken. No pressure. No judgement. Just the question: What could this become? Creativity is a skill you practice: with coffee and a community unafraid to try. Weekly peer-to-peer skill-sharing, upcycling challenges and workshops with visiting creatives. For more complex repairs, we refer on to our network of professionals. Monthly community events bring the neighbourhood together around creativity and circularity. Broken Rosenthal vase? Try the Japanese art of repair: Kintsugi! // Our mission is to keep things in circulation for as long as possible: not just items in good condition, but broken things as well. Every swapped item saves CO₂, and every repaired and upcycled item multiplies that saving. How SHIRCLE depot differs from Josy: Like Josy, the swap area is staffed, with the difference that self-check-in/out simplifies the statistics electronically. Leaving more time for what matters: people, things and connections. Unlike Josy, SHIRCLE depot rescues broken items from waste. Somewhere at home, it waits: the favorite mug, hairline crack and all, your gramma's old quilt, too worn to use, too loved to lose, the broken chair, too well-crafted for the trash. Things that deserve a better ending, but what? SHIRCLE depot gets it. Bring the broken thing. Find out what it can become. The workshop as the neighbourhood's hobby room: tools and workspace ready to go. Broken things are the perfect material to experiment with, no fear of ruining anything. The technical infrastructure (self-check-in, membership card) is already up and running: SHIRCLE@Josy has been operating since late 2025 in partnership with the City of Zurich. SHIRCLE depot builds directly on the SHIRCLE platform, putting lessons learned from Josy into practice on a smaller scale, costing less, and rescuing broken things from the trash. // A SHIRCLE depot in the Netto-Null Pilotquartier would be more than a swapping hub: it would anchor creative circularity as the new normal in Züri. Josy light. And more.
