Short summary

What should be created?
The KlimaInsel is a modular pot system in which herbs, vegetables and wild plants take root in the middle of the city. It creates a place where plants, people and small animals meet and synergies can arise. How? Based on the Garden Island project by the design collective atelier zwäg, we further developed the existing concept together with an environmental engineer and a biologist. Together with you, the neighborhood in Binz, we want to create a place that grows, blooms and connects: with seating elements to linger, bee hotels for buzzing guests and everything it takes to create a green oasis in the middle of the city. Through conversations and joint learning, impulses are carried like seeds to other neighborhoods and continue to grow there. Why? We want more (bio)diversity and (species) diversity in the city. Planting improves the microclimate by filtering the air, and the water stored in the soil substrate provides noticeable cooling on hot days, in line with the sponge city principle. The KlimaInsel offers various organisms, such as insects, important, otherwise threatened niches. Thus, it also serves as a place of enlightenment and learning. The new modules are made of climate-positive materials. The integration of biochar permanently binds CO₂, up to 3 kg CO₂ per kilogram of biochar.

Are you an individual or part of a group?
We are an organization (e.g. association, foundation, educational institution, NGO)
Name
Association KlimaInsel
Are you implementing the idea alone or are you still looking for comrades-in-arms?
I/we are still looking for comrades-in-arms
Describe the place(s)
The Climate Island can be set up on sealed or any other substrate without civil engineering work. A possible location would be, for example, the square at Binz train station or another place that heats up strongly in summer.
