Erdglück - community compost projects (recycling of food waste into worm humus on site for communities/organizations)

Avatar: Vladyslav Lange Vladyslav Lange

What should be created?
In Switzerland, 2.8 million tons of food waste are generated, 20% of which ends up in the garbage. At the same time, the soil strategy is intended to increase appreciation for the soil and regenerate soil fertility (https://www.bafu.admin.ch/de/bodenstrategie). We want to solve both problems through the circular idea. Nutrients that come from the soil should be returned to it. Several compost projects are to be carried out at different locations in the pilot district. These places can be companies, schools & kindergartens as well as other communities in which people live and work together. The purpose is to no longer treat and dispose of food waste as waste, but to recognize it from a resource and thus produce living soil (worm humus) on site in order to reduce CO2 emissions on the one hand but also to create awareness. The self-produced worm humus can be used as fertiliser for plants, green spaces or for growing vegetables. Due to its high number of microorganisms and nutrients, worm humus has an invigorating effect on the soil and makes plants more resilient. When participating in the Climathon Züri, we were able to determine through interviews with passers-by on the street that an alternative to the green bin would be good, as communal separation does not always work there. Some people were also very enthusiastic about the idea of making compost and would support the idea. Company employees also pay close attention to sustainable solutions and would like to see them implemented in the company. We have already successfully implemented projects in Germany and therefore have the experience to plan and carry out such projects. Our role in this is to identify potential places and enable them to compost on site. If the time capacity is given, we provide everything we can to ensure that the project can run independently and support its implementation. For organizations that do not have capacity, we offer an all-round service in which we implement and supervise composting.
