Rotach Resilience - From asphalt to habitat

Avatar: Martin Martin

What should be created?
The Rotachstrasse 1–8 area will become a pilot section for climate-adapted, lively and communal urban life. A new habitat is being created in just a few metres: less asphalt, more greenery, more water, more encounters and better accessibility for all. Objectives • Reduce heat, improve microclimate • Store rainwater on site (sponge city) • Strengthen habitats for birds, insects and bats • More encounters, less traffic pressure • Promotion of sharing instead of owning (Shircle) • Saving Food (Madame Frigo) • Breaking down barriers Measures (pilot section Rotachstrasse 1–8) • 3–6 climate-resilient trees • 80–150 m² unsealing • 2–3 sponge city / retention elements • Nature-friendly lighting (1-2 lamps) • Wildflower and biodiversity areas • 1–3 meeting islands instead of parking spaces • Lateral, safe cycle path • Mini Shared Space for traffic calming • 1 Shircle Sharing Point • 1 Madame Frigo fridge • 2–4 barrier-free pavement areas Results • Cooler road and better rainwater management • Higher biodiversity • More quality of stay and more social neighbourhood life • Resource-saving everyday life • Transferable model for Rotachstrasse 9 – 27... "Our vision is that the city of the future will be more comfortable, quieter, greener and healthier than it is today." Kay Axhausen
