Asphalt-free road surface

Avatar: Stefan Schorb Stefan Schorb

What should be created?
Asphalt is considered the most defining material in the cityscape, whether by car, bicycle or on foot – you move almost constantly on asphalt. However, asphalt also pollutes the city and its residents. Due to its heat-absorbing properties, the material ensures high temperatures in urban areas and is also enormously stressful in traditional production. With this project idea, a road with an asphalt-free surface is to be created in streets that already have an existing low volume of motor vehicles (e.g. Sandstrasse, Eibenstrasse, etc.). The space was to be filled by a mixture of green space (grass, mulch, trees) and narrow-gauge gravel or gravel honeycomb path, so that the road could continue to be used for the low volume of traffic, as well as deliveries and emergencies. At the same time, the area is to be designed as a space where life and not traffic plays the central role. This pilot not only reduces the city temperature and CO₂ emissions, but also creates further side effects through the piloting of such asphalt-free road surfaces. Living space for the residents, play space for children and more attractive areas for cafés and businesses due to higher pedestrian traffic. There is also a signal effect for sustainable mobility behaviour and improved use of space in all corners of the district/city. The creation of such a pilot street will make living in the Alt-Wiedikon and Binz districts more livable for everyone. It reduces high temperatures in summer, reduces CO₂ emissions due to unsustainable asphalt pavement and ensures active absorption of CO₂ throughout the day through greening. In order to build a prototype of such an asphalt-free road surface, I need support. That is why I am happy to invite everyone to join this initiative in order to change the neighbourhood sustainably and positively. (PS: Image is AI-generated)
example
The most obvious example I know of is the sponge city, which, however, revolves around the handling of (waste) water
