Binz Component Warehouse

Avatar: Patricia Wepfer Patricia Wepfer

What should be created?
Dismantling and renovation work in Zurich produces thousands of tons of high-quality components every year – most of them functional, often disposed of. Although the idea of circular construction is popular and is also promoted by the city of Zurich, there is often a lack of logistics for an even broader application. The implementation of a component warehouse is sometimes one of the most difficult hurdles due to the high space required. Vision: A component warehouse and a new competence centre for circular economy under construction are to be built in Binz. The accumulation of architectural firms and other representatives of the construction industry makes Binz an ideal place for such a center. The Binz component warehouse will be a new, physically located center for sustainable construction in the city of Zurich and complements the numerous existing online consulting and mediation services. Planners, companies and builders will find space here to concretise their projects and a new point of contact for questions relating to dismantling, storage and sales. The Binz component warehouse will be a new meeting place for collaboration, knowledge transfer and innovation for the circular economy in construction. Concept: The center is to be implemented and operated in cooperation with other industry representatives on the site and the city of Zurich. Architectural firms and companies bring reusable components from their construction sites to the component warehouse; whereby the quality of the components is checked in advance by specialists. Planners and companies continuously orient themselves about the inventory in the component warehouse through frequent visits to the easily accessible warehouse and can thus include the reusable elements in the planning at an early stage. Functions: Physical component warehouse - publicly accessible exhibition, storage and sale of used components for architects, builders, craftsmen and private individuals; Workshops and Re-Use Labs - preparation, adaptation and certification of components; mediation and cooperation - the various actors in the construction process find a common basis for a project-specific planning.
