Rethinking greywater – recovering energy, reusing water several times

Avatar: Tobias Kraft Tobias Kraft

What should be created?
A small, location-independent greywater pilot module that shows in the neighbourhood how warm shower and washbasin water can first be used for energy and then biologically purified. The system consists of a grey water tank with an integrated heat exchanger in the building and a small, planted external filter that makes the purified water usable for toilet flushing or irrigation. The module saves drinking water, recovers energy and relieves the sewer system – a simple, visible real-world laboratory for the urban water cycle.
example
Inspiration from existing Swiss solutions: greywater treatment, decentralised plant filters for wastewater and compact heat recovery systems from greywater. For the first time, the project combines these elements into a small neighbourhood pilot module.

Are you implementing the idea alone or are you still looking for comrades-in-arms?
I/we are still looking for comrades-in-arms
Describe the place(s)
The idea is open to all locations and can be implemented in various micro-locations in the pilot district: e.g. courtyards, small green spaces, cooperative outdoor areas or semi-public intermediate spaces. It is important to have a building with easy access to a greywater string and a greenable outdoor area for the filtration bed. The exact location is to be chosen together with the project management and the owners on the basis of technical and social criteria.
