After the hot summer – Second survey on green and open spaces in the city of Zurich and the Glatt Valley region
The hot summer of 2026 impressively demonstrated how climate change is becoming a burden, especially in Switzerland's urban areas. Accordingly, the importance of cool and shady places in public spaces is increasing. As part of the "Mapping Needs, Shaping Cities" research project , the Institute of Spatial Development (IRAP) is investigating the importance of green and open spaces for the health and well-being of the population. The second online survey is currently underway in the city of Zurich and the Glatttal region.
Together with the partner cities of Zurich, Dübendorf, Wallisellen, Opfikon and Kloten, the IRAP Institute for Spatial Development invites all residents to share their experiences, needs and assessments of the use of green and open spaces. The aim is to gain valuable insights into the everyday use of these spaces and to better align them with the needs of the population in the future.
Green spaces as the key to health and quality of life
The positive influence of green and open spaces on physical and mental health has been scientifically well documented. They promote recreation, exercise and social interaction and make an important contribution to the quality of life. At the same time, cities and municipalities are faced with the challenge of safeguarding and developing these qualities in the long term in the course of increasing structural densification.
This is where the research project comes in: It examines how public green and open spaces are used and which qualities are particularly important from the point of view of the population. Questions of health promotion as well as social and neighbourhood-specific aspects are also taken into account.
