About this process

How do people use the green and open spaces in their surroundings – and what do they need for their well-being? These are the questions that the IRAP Institute for Spatial Development at the OST – Eastern Switzerland University of Applied Sciences is investigating as part of the research project "Mapping Needs, Shaping Cities". The core of the project is the use of map-based online surveys to ask the population about their spatial usage behaviour.

Digital participation for better planning

An initial survey will be conducted in the canton of Zurich from mid-May to mid-June 2026 in cooperation with the partner cities of Zurich, Dübendorf, Wallisellen, Opfikon and Kloten. The aim is to gain valuable insights into the everyday use of green and open spaces so that they can be better aligned with the needs of the population in the future.

Contribution to climate-adapted and healthy urban development

Green and open spaces have an important function in promoting health and well-being in the population. Especially in the context of inner development and adaptation to climate change, the quality of green and open spaces is becoming increasingly important.
