Survey October 2025

Valuable information on usage behaviour.

In the third survey of the VBZ passenger voice, questions from various topics of the VBZ were dealt with. Once again, more than 200 passengers took part. The results thus provide a picture of the mood that is meaningful due to the high level of participation.

The findings on the use of UBS sockets and luggage transport provide important additional information for future vehicle inspections and the procurement of new buses. The results on the right of way at the pedestrian crossing show that the majority of our passengers are aware of the right of way rules. However, a small proportion do not know them. This is another indication of the relevance of the road safety campaign "Street Smart Zurich".

Topic: Use of USB sockets

4% of respondents use the sockets on almost every journey and a good 16% use them every few weeks.

Nutzung_USB

A good half of the participants never use the USB sockets. As reasons for not using them, the majority stated that they charge their devices once a day in the office or at home, which is sufficient. Just under 7% said that the charging cables do not fit into the USB socket (only USB type A plugs are installed in the bus).

Non-Nutzung_USB______

Topic: Luggage transport on buses and trams

The backpack/laptop bag is the luggage that our respondents most often carry with them on our buses and trams. 30% are at one to two days a week with a shopping bag with the VBZ. At least twice a year, half of the participants transport a suitcase and a quarter a hiking backpack. Skateboards and collapsible e-scooters are transported the least.

Luggage transport

______

Topic: Right of way at pedestrian crossings

A good 92% know the correct right of way rule: The tram always has the right of way. On the other hand, just under 8% misunderstand the right of way rule or do not know it – a small but safety-relevant proportion.

Right of way

The road safety campaign "Street Smart Zurich" has been running since December 2025 by the VBZ, the Zurich City Police and the Traffic Department. One of the campaign's motifs is dedicated to this rule of priority.

______

topic: Wish to stop at the bus

The

majority announces the wish to stop in good time, but a good 7% assume that the buses will stop automatically at the stop.

Haltewunsch_Bus

Almost half of our respondents have always complied with their wish to stop on the bus. Just under 40% stated that the bus rarely did not stop, even though the stop signal was displayed on the monitor in the vehicle. Just under 2% say that this has happened to them more often.
